Description
The common name "sea buckthorn" refers to the numerous thorns of its branches and the yellow color of its fruits. As for its botanical name, Hippophae derives from the Greek words Ιππο (horse) and φαέ (eat), which seems to allude to the legend that says that sea buckthorn was the preferred food of the mythological Pegasus, from which it obtained strength and vigor. The legend also speaks of sick and injured horses that were abandoned and in the wild and were later discovered running completely healthy and strong. An investigation discovered that the horses survived by feeding on the leaves, branches and berries of the sea buckthorn plant. Sea buckthorn has been known and used in China since ancient times which seem to date back to the Tang Dynasty (7th-8th century). Its use is reflected in the texts of traditional Tibetan medicine of the eighth century, which describes the ability of the fruits of this plant to tone the "yin" and strengthen the "yang". In India it is part of the traditional ayurvedic remedies. In ancient Greece, Dioscorides described its tonifying properties and it seems that the army of Genghis Khan drank the juice of the fruits to increase resistance. Apparently, it was the first juice to be taken into space. At the Seoul Olympic Games, the juice of the sea buckthorn fruit was qualified as an official drink. HIGH FIBER CONTENT
