Description
Ginkgo biloba is a very special and unique millenary deciduous tree of the Ginkgoaceae family. It is described as a living fossil native from China, where its name means “silver apricot”. Also known as the “tree of the 40 shields” for its economic value in Europe.
The active parts of this plant are the leaves, which contain phenolic compounds (flavonols such as quercetin and kaempferol) hydroxycinnamates, apigenin biflavones (such as bilobetin, ginkgetin and sciadopitysine), oligomeric proanthocyanidins, terpene lactones (such as ginkgolide and sesquiterpene bilobalide) and phytosterols.
Properties
Traditionally, Ginkgo has been used as:
Vascular regulator: arterial vasodilatation, venous vasoconstriction, reinforcement of capillary resistance and increase in blood flow.
Inhibitor of platelet aggregation: increase in tolerance to hypoxia and anoxia (increasing the Glucose and oxygen uptake and decreasing the brain requirements of oxygen)
Antioxidant: captures free radicals and inhibits the generation of reactive oxygen compounds.
Neuroprotective.
At the hearing level it improves the ultra structural quality of the vestibular sensory epithelium, modulating the capillary permeability and the general microcirculation.
Main indications
Circulatory insufficiency (improves blood flow to brain).
Memory and attention deficiency (improves cognitive ability).
Vertigo and dizziness.
Directions
1 or 2 capsules daily, with a glass of water.
Warnings
It can enhance the anticoagulant and antiplatelet effect of some medications.
Its use is not recommended for epileptic people without the control of a specialist.
Pregnancy: effects have not yet been described.
